Extractions of black heads
I’ve frequently had clients come in and tell me they hate facials, that they don’t find them relaxing, and that they are painful! This always surprises me as I pride myself on providing a relaxing facial.
What’s the culprit? Extractions!
Granted there are some people that are very sensitive and the lightest of pressure can be irritating to them. But for the most part extractions should not be painful! Sure there may be some mild discomfort but it should not be severe! With proper steaming and enzymes extractions can be made so much easier. Sure there are some extractions that can be difficult, extractions should not be forced! If you are in a great amount of pain it is likely your skin is being damaged!
Extractions are not for everyone and are an option in a facial. I do recommend extractions as pores (especially pores in the nose) can become full of blackheads and this can give the skin a dirty appearance and also prevent product from penetrating.

I’m excited to introduce my new line Dermaquest to Zen Body & Skin. Dermaquest has a variety of options in treating different a variety of skin issues. Right now I’m focusing on brightening treatments. Getting rid of those brown spots (sometimes we call them sun spots or age spots) These brown spots are typically acquired through the damaging affects of the suns rays and can be very difficult to get rid of.
Introducing the first step in treating these brown spots! Mango Bright Peel with lactic acid and Kojic acid. These peel focuses on resurfacing the skin and lightening. There is very little discomfort with this peel and NO down time. It has also been referred to as the Lunchtime peel. It will leave your face looking and feeling refreshed and brightened.
For more stubborn spots the next step would be the Skin Bright Peel. This peel is much more aggressive and you can expect to peel for 7-10 days. Results have been dramatic! Up to 50% lightening in the very first peel! The Skin Bright Peel has been compared to the VI Peel which is known for its dramatic results.

A few more tips! Try not to pick at your acne. I know it’s hard. But picking can prolong healing time and cause scarring. Make sure you keep your makeup brushes clean and frequently change out your pillow case. Hair products can also get on your skin and clog pores. Diet may also be important. Studies suggest that eating a clean low glycemic diet of fruits, vegetables, brown rice and nuts can contribute to clearer skin. There is also strong evidence that dairy consumption can aggravate acne due to presence of hormones and bioactive molecules.

So I’m very excited to say I just ordered my first BioBliss kits. One for the eye area and one for the forehead. I’ll be able to include these as an upgrade to any facial or even to a massage!
Ok, so you’re wondering…what is BioBliss?
BioBliss is basically a patch with tiny batteries that you place on your forehead or around the eye area that uses microcurrent technology to gently infuse product into your skin. Estheticians love this concept! Why? Because we understand that a great majority of products we put on our skin (no matter how beneficial the ingredients) simply to do not absorb into the skin. Recently I had a client say they didn’t understand the benefit of a 90 minute facial. So I thought I’d take a minute to write why I thought trying out a 90 minute facial is so beneficial.
First off you automatically get more time with Ultrasonic Cleansing. The ultrasonic cleansing part of the facial is one of the most beneficial parts of the facial. Ultrasonic does so many things and really is good for all skin types ranging from acne to anti-aging. Ultrasonic exfoliation provides a gentle exfoliation. It uses a sound frequency to gently lift dead skin and debris from the pores. It can also perform some extractions and is anti-bacterial. I have many clients tell me their skin is very clear weeks after a facial with ultrasonic. The ultrasonic can also stimulate collagen and elastin production and allows products to penetrate deeper into the skin. With my 1 hour facials you usually get just a few minutes of ultrasonic, but with 90 minutes you get between 10 and 15 minutes.
Another benefit is more pamper time! Most of this time is spent on one of my favorite parts of the facial. The facial massage. Facial massage is excellent for detoxifying the skin, moving lymph, de-puffing eyes and increasing circulation. There’s also more time spend on neck and shoulder massage.
And of course if there’s any special skin concern the client has, I get to spend more time on that problem. Such as if a client has need of extra extractions. I have more time to really clean up their pores!
So this is why I’d recommend trying out the 90 minute facial. It really is of benefit to your skin!

Benefits of Tea Tree Oil
Australian Aboriginal people have long recognized the multi-faced healing power of Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca alternafolia) but it wasn’t until the 1900′s that the Western World took notice.
Tea Tree Oil is most importantly used to help the immune system fight off infection. It activates the white corpuscles to aid in the defense against invading bacteria and helps to shorten the duration of an illness. It has properties that are antibiotic (combats infection) antiseptic (helps to control infection) and bactericide (kills bacteria), and fungicide (kills fungus). Tea tree blends well with several other essential oils. For an uplifting scent try mixing it with Lemon Essential Oil. For acne add equal amounts of Lavender Essential Oil (to reduce redness and inflammation). Because essential oils are potent it is best to dilute with a carrier oil (I love coconut oil) when applying directly to the skin. Also avoid contact with eyes.
